As business professionals, we need to act as if we are running our own company. You need to act as “You, Inc.” in order to develop the kind of career that will get you to your goals. Do you know where you want “You, Inc.” to be to be in 3, 5, or even 10 years from now?

Visionary people have a plan and work toward the achievement of that plan and vision on a daily basis. Have you got what it takes? Here are 9 things it takes to develop a legendary career.

PASSION

There has to be a burning desire for a successful outcome. Any successful venture, whether it’s the number one Girl Scout cookie seller, the Special Olympics athlete or the CEO… I can guarantee one thing: it is lead by a passionate person on a mission.

COMMITMENT

Is there a willingness to do whatever it takes to achieve the goals you have? Will you go the extra that others won’t? That doesn’t mean you give up your personal life for your business and financial goals. Maybe it means completing two more action items even when you’re not up for it.

PARTNERSHIPS

Lofty goals can’t be achieved alone. Gather the people around you who have what you want and find out how they got it. It’s okay to ask for help. What kind of help do you need? Who can give it to you? In return, how can you help those partners reach their goals?

INVESTMENT

Do you have an abundance mentality or a scarcity mentality? Investment to achieve your vision means taking a risk. What are you willing to put into your goals without complete certainty you will get a return on investment? I don’t only mean in money.

We also need to invest in time, learning, and anything that will solve the issues holding us back. What happens if you invest and it fails? It’s a legitimate concern. The real concern though, is what happens if you don’t invest and continue on a path of mediocrity?

HEALTH

You are the engine. Failure to take care of yourself means failure in life. The health of mind, body and spirit are critical for success. You can’t have a successful career if the rest of your life is falling apart.

FRIENDS AND FAMILY

This is your support mechanism and your needed diversion from the daily grind of work. They are an oasis where you find rest, relaxation and good fun.

ONGOING PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

Nothing stands still. There is no finish line as long as you get up and go to work every day. Learning keeps us sharp and ahead of those who simply go to a job daily. Research has shown that by learning new skills, the brain creates new neural pathways that make it work faster and better. This means hobbies like playing a musical instrument, reading, learning a new language, doing puzzles and practicing meditation can boost your focus and efficiency at work.

PERSONAL PRESENCE

People are attracted to personal presence. They feel a kinship that allows them to feel comfortable with you. It gets rid of the barriers that stop productive communication.

Some people go to work each day with personal goals and plans and others just show up. Which are you?
